Next Saturday 14th December our St Paul’s Boxing Academy opens its doors for the final time before the much-needed refurbishment when we host a Devon select.
We are currently on international and national duty- with our boxers competing in Guildford and Lisbon in major box cups.
St Paul’s Boxing Academy never rests on its laurels.
7th and 8th December
Odivelas Box Cup – Lisbon, Portugal
St. Paul’s went with a strong team of 5 boxers to compete in the highly regarded Odivelas box cup.
After the draw only one boxer Bailey Miller was due to fight in the quarterfinals, with the other four advancing to the semi-finals.
Bailey boxed an Irish National Finalist, which proved to be a close bout with both landing scoring shots throughout. We thought Bailey’s work rate should have edged it but all judges went for the Irish lad.
Will Fethon boxed an Irish champion and it was a fast-paced encounter, will landed some very good combinations and kept the tempo till the last bell, but unfortunately lost on a split decision.
Shane Smith boxed a 5 times national champion from Scotland and produced one of his best displays to date, he continued to take it to his opponent through all 3 rounds with superb bravery and guts to lose a unanimous decision.
Joe Young boxed the Portuguese champion and flew at him from the start at a relentless pace giving his opponent a standing count, he continued the pace to win a unanimous points decision and advance to the final.
Ted Jackson put on a classic boxing display against a strong Scottish opponent, picking him off to take a unanimous points decision and book his place in the final.
Joe Young boxed a Scottish international and champion, it was a fast-paced encounter with both landing good clean shots, both boxers had points deducted, each round was very close and hard to score but the judges favoured the Scottish lad on this occasion.
Ted Jackson boxed a Scottish national champion and again after a slow start he picked the pace up in rounds 2/3 to edge it close at the final bell, all judges scored it to the Scottish lad.
Coach Darren said “It was a thoroughly enjoyable competition, which involved elite European boxers, with all our boxers mixing it with them and arguably being very unlucky with some decisions. All our lads should be proud of themselves, as they represented the club and country impeccably. It was a pleasure to take them all away, we are competing with the best in Europe.”
Maddie on the Road
What a performance from our own young star Madie Gittins, boxing Ireland’s European bronze medallist Robyn Kelly. Although Madi did not get the nod her performance showed she is a leading light for female boxing in Hull. Head Coach, Mike said, “We are so proud of Madie, she has a very promising future ahead.”
In Partnership with Hull University
Our on going and fruitful partnership with the Hull University Boxing Club continued today as Head Coach, Mike took a session at the newly refurbished University Sports Arena.
Mike Said, “Well done to Alexander Hopkins and the team.”
Hull Daily Mail Sporting Champions Awards
St Paul’s Boxing Gym has nominated three of our members for awards this year. We have entered Harvey Lambert for Sportsperson of the year, Maddie Gittens for Junior Girl of the Year and Ted Jackson for Junior Sportsman of the year. In addition, we have entered the gym for Sports club of the year and for the Community Award.
Head coach, Mike said, “We are blessed with talent in depth in the gym and this is one small way that our dedicated boxers can receive a prestigious recognition”.
Preparation is Everything
Head Coach, Mike Bromby said “Thanks to Legions Ashley Martin for bringing down Zach Evans and Brad Casey this evening. They provided great sparring for Ted Jackson and Joe Young’s s preparation for the Odivelas Box Cup, Lisbon, Portugal next weekend”
Also, class skills by Tyler Ridley, Shane Smith, Harrison Mays, and Will Fethon in their preparations for the same tournament.
